Bio
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Stella won first prize in Singapore’s National Playwriting Competition three times – for The Bridge (1977), about drama therapy in drug rehabilitation; Trial (1982), where Socrates is tried for sedition in Singapore; and Emily of Emerald Hill (1984), a monodrama on a waif who becomes a Peranakan matriarch. Emily was invited to the 1985 Commonwealth Arts Festival in Edinburgh and to the 1986 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Besides plays and short fiction, she has published two novels, The Scholar and the Dragon (1986) and Eston (1995), which took the Merit Award in the 1994 Singapore Literature Prize. Stella also writes lyrics for musical theatre.
