Between the Lines: Silences in Poetry

These poets have got words in spades, but they’re also here for the silences in between. How do the spaces within a poem speak louder than words? We discuss the humble slash, line break, comma, caesura, and all the possibilities that take place adjacent to, within, and all around the text.

Christine Chia

Christine Chia is the author of The Law of Second Marriages, and Separation: a history. She co-edited the groundbreaking anthology A Luxury We Cannot Afford.

Robert Yeo

Robert Yeo has published in many genres, beginning with poetry and moving on to plays (performed and published), essays, memoirs, libretto (for opera).

Tse Hao Guang

Tse Hao Guang (谢皓光) is the author of The International Left-Hand Calligraphy Association (Tinfish Press 2023) and Deeds of Light (Math Paper Press 2015, shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize).

Theophilus Kwek

Theophilus Kwek has published four poetry collections, two of which were shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize. His work has appeared in The Guardian, Times Literary Supplement, Mekong Review, and elsewhere. He serves as Poetry Editor of the Asian Books Blog, and his latest collection is Moving House (Carcanet Press).
