A wealthy family with lots of conflicts, a marriage without the blessings of his/her parents, and a rebel turned over a new leaf to prove his love for a girl — we’ve encountered these typical storylines in Malay novels so often now that you can guess the rest of the plot just by the first chapter.  And yet, readers continue to (secretly) enjoy these predictable plots and happy endings. How can writers balance this demand for the clichéd comforts and add a unique narrative to their craft to keep readers engaged?

Sebuah keluarga yang mempunyai kemewahan tetapi dibelenggu konflik; sebuah perkahwinan tanpa restu orang tua dan si jejaka berubah untuk membuktikan cintanya kepada seorang gadis. Inilah jalan cerita yang sering ditemui dalam novel sehingga ada kalanya anda dapat meneka baki plot hanya dengan membaca bab pertama. Namun, para pembaca terus (secara diam-diam) menikmati plot sebegini dan mahukan pengakhiran yang boleh diduga. Bagaimanakah penulis dapat menyeimbangkan permintaan klise ini dengan tambahan naratif yang unik untuk mengekalkan minat pembaca?

Moderator

Noridah Kamari is a phD holder in Malay Literature from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). She is currently the co-owner and publisher at Unggun Creative, a Malay literary publishing outfit. Her collection of poems, entitled Gigi Nadim Masih Rongak, was published in 2020.
