About

The works in Short Tongue, the new collection of poems by Wang Mun Kiat, are pithy, succinct, capable of spontaneous assault. The title of the anthology suggests the slurring of speech, communication barriers, the inability to defend oneself. Every poem exists in its own unique logic, and also transforms into a knife thrown at close quarters. It causes a sharp pain but it may also bring on a knowing smile. There are many articulate poets in Singapore, but honest and outspoken ones the likes of Wang are few and far between. This is not simply the addition of a new poetry collection to Singapore Chinese literature. It also introduces younger writers to a new way of writing, encouraging them to cut out a new path with truthful and muscular voices.
